Fetching Water

As the sun sets and Ugandans prepare for their evening meals, the dirt roads leading to and from watering holes, springs, wells and public taps are crowded with people, mostly children, fetching water. Even those as young as four can be seen carry yellow containers, jerrycans, filled with amaazi in their strong grips and more often on their heads. They don't seem to mind their burdens, usually performing the dusk ritual as they laugh and play. The chore itself as well as the child labor, both so utterly foreign to me, are a source of personal fascination and yet another lesson in gratitude.
